Pathogen emergence
Exploring the emergence of novel pathogens
Zoonoses have the potential to cause widespread human epidemics. However, understanding the spread and maintenance of pathogens, who are mainly found in animal species is complicated as these infections are largely hidden.
One major emerging pathogen is Nipah virus, which spills over from its natural reservoir of Pteropus bats causes human cases each year in Bangladesh, which are fatal in most instances. In a collaboration with icddr,b, Johns Hopkins University among others, we work with different data types (sequence data, serology data, case data) to study the patterns of emergence and spread of Nipah virus.
We have also become involved in projects exploring the spread of SARS-CoV-2.
